THE PRIMITIVE METHODISTS A FEMALE PREACHER 1850 |
---|
On Sunday afternoon last the Chapel recently erected by the religious sect terming themselves Primitive Methodists, in Latrobe Street, was opened for the first time for public worship. The place was crowded to suffocation, several females were carried out fainting, and there could not have been a fewer number than three hundred persons congregated around the building who were disappointed of obtaining admission.
We intend no libel on the sex when we say that the novelty of a female 'divine,' a character which is quite unscriptural, was a no inconsiderable attraction.
Mrs. Ride, the wife of the recognised minister ascending the pulpit and delivering an excellent sermon, selecting for her text that sublime passage of Scripture "What if a man gain the whole world and lose his own soul."
On the following day a tea meeting in aid of the building fund took place in the chapel which was again most inconveniently crowded, and at the collection which subsequently took place a very handsome sum was raised.
